l___espace is pleased to invite you to “The Book of Life”
A performance in which the globally acclaimed Rwandan social activist Kiki Katese leads an audience through a remarkable journey – a kind of how-to guide to rebuild a deep understanding of life in the aftermath of incalculable loss.
This play is based on Kiki’s years-long project of accumulating letters written by survivors and perpetrators of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
These letters, written by ordinary people, are addressed to those who are gone.
The piece is infused with Ms. Katese’s captivating storytelling and original music performed and sung by the internationally acclaimed Women Drummers of Rwanda.
Accompanying Ms. Katese onstage is a hidden puppeteer manipulating shadow puppets to illustrate both the letters and the mythic story of a group of animals searching for a way out of darkness.
At a time when our world is racked with disharmonies, hatreds and struggle, The Book of Life offers hope: unlocking life after trauma, and finding a humane way forward full of joy.
