GLOBAL HEALTH EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM

The Global Health Emerging Leaders Program is an innovative program that aims to deliver global health learning to future generation of leaders in health, especially in developing countries. It is run by Global Health Focus (GHF) in collaboration with partners in different parts of the world. The program which is styled as a course aims to raise a community of critical thinkers and leaders in global health who will contribute in building a healthier and more equitable world. About 10,000 students and young professionals in 26 countries across Asia, Africa and Europe have graduated from the program in the last 5 years.

Scope

Global health is the health of populations in the global context. Globalization, which has resulted in interdependence of the world’s economies, increase in international travel and technological advancement have a significant health risk. Infectious and Non-communicable diseases NCDs have continually been on the increase. The Global South, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa is greatly affected by the double burden of disease due to its current state of poverty, illiteracy, health inequalities and weak institutions. The Global Health Emerging Leaders Program is positioned to empower participants with the knowledge and skills to tackle these challenges.

Program delivery

The program emphasizes on the understanding of one’s values and skills important in becoming a good advocate for better health of populations. The curriculum is designed to be multi-faceted and introduces to the participants an integrative approach towards the understanding of the determinants of health encompassing individual to global. Learning and teaching are delivered by a dynamic mix of academics and professionals who are experts and experienced in the field. Topics are particularly chosen and designed to cover the important challenges the world faces today. These encompass a wide range of topics and issues from theories to policy and practice and from macro issues that impact at the micro level. They will touch on themes that contribute to the debates in global health such as development, health economics, global politics, human rights, climate, and gender

Program Objectives

The program aims to: a) To provide a good understanding of the theories and concepts of global health. b) To examine the social, political and economic determinants of health disparities. c) To explore the different tools used in understanding global health inequity. d) To provide tools, skills and a good understanding when exploring a career in global health. e) To develop critical thinkers among future leaders and practitioners of public health and global health. f) To provide inspiration and motivation to participants and engage them more in taking a more proactive role in shaping a better global health scenario.

Target participants

Participants will include students and early to mid-career health care professionals with a demonstrated passion for public and/or global health, and may even have limited to extensive experience practicing in the field. They will typically come from the whole spectrum of health professionals and non-health professionals who are interested in public/global health and development.

Key Deliverable:

The program shall help participants answer foundational questions that may change the course of their career, and maybe even their lives, such as: What can I do more to help my community, my country? How can I maximize my own potential to do the most good in the world, to achieve health for all?

Programme Director

Don Eliseo Lucero Prisno III BSc MD MPH MSc PhD FRSPH FHEA

Dr Don is a Visiting Scientist at the Harvard Medical School and Global health Tutor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). He currently leads two global and high impact journals in global health as Editor-in-chief (Wiley) and Managing Editor (BMC Global Health Policy Journal). He is also the Founder of GHF and the lead Course Director of the Global Health Emerging Leaders Programme. He was recently the Country Director for the Philippines at ACCESS Health International, a New York-based global think tank in health and development. He worked for the University of Liverpool (UK and China) for a decade and also holds academic appointments with a number of universities in Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Don is a global health expert known for his work in research and empowerment in Asia and Africa. He finished his PhD in Global Health and Social Sciences at Cardiff University, MPH (International Course in Health and Development) at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, MSc Health Economics Policy and Law (Global Health) at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, BSc and MD at the University of the Philippines. He has a major interest in global health, global surgery, and health systems, policy and financing. He has travelled to more than a hundred countries for his work. He is an avid sportsman who loves running, scuba diving and paragliding.

Graduates

Graduates from the program have gone to become key influencers of policy and practice locally, nationally and globally. Most have been awarded as young leaders in global health while others have engaged in research projects that aim to reduce inequities worldwide and improve health outcomes for everyone.

To confirm your registration and attendance, you must attach a proof of payment. The fees are as follows:

Internationals: $320

Local Professionals: 30,000 Rwf

Local Students: 15,000 Rwf

N.B: – Fees include: Branded T-shirt, Program materials (Notebooks, badges, pens), Lunch, tea break and coffee break. Additionally for internationals, the fees include local transport, accommodation, and all evening events (Gala night, Kigali City Tour, MUHAZI Beach & Boat riding).
